The Media Arts program offers degrees and certificates in Public Relations, Digital Design, and Website Development. There are also minors in Advertising, Graphic Design, and Journalism, and post-baccalaureate certificates in most areas. Programs incorporate the latest technological tools as they prepare students for careers bridging traditional and new media. Each program culminates in a one-semester internship with a media-related employer, offering students valuable industry experience.
Paul says: "Our graduates are in all kinds of media industries – TV, radio and newspapers. They are online reporters and graphic and digital designers. Some of our people work for high-profile magazines in major markets. New Orleans is a medium-sized media market. Some of our students stay here – and we encourage them because we need good people in New Orleans. But we also have people who find internships in big markets and end up being employed in those major media markets – New York, LA, Atlanta, Chicago. We have graduates all over the country. That forms a network of people who are already outside the program to bring people who are still studying into some of the major markets for internships and ultimately to become employed in those markets."
"We adapt the curriculum to keep up with rapid changes in the media industry and advancements in technology. At the same time, we focus on the basics. A reporter still has to know how to interview and how to write a good lead, but we're also teaching that same person how to tailor work for a new media audience online. A good reporter, a good designer or anybody who is related to any type of visual or editorial media has to have a natural curiosity about the world around them. And today's media professionals have to be multi-skilled. You have to be prepared to learn as much about visual media as you do about editorial communication so that when you leave our classrooms, you can carry out multiple functions."
