GIVING to scholarships
SCS students are serious, motivated people who will shape the future of our region. Scholarships make a critical difference. Merit scholarships support dedicated SCS students, who benefit from the Elmo and Margaret Allen Waltzer Scholarship Fund, the Thomas J. Assad/Tidewater Scholarship Fund, the James and Alana Bishop Monaghan Fund, and the Davenport Family Fund, which provides the Louis Barrilleaux Scholarships.
Such funds are the result of generous gifts from alumni, friends, parents, and supportive corporations. The Barrilleaux Scholarships were endowed in the memory of the University College dean by Joe Davenport, a Tulane SCS alumnus and retired IBM executive.
A classic SCS success story, Davenport attended then-University College on a part-time basis for seven years, earning his bachelor of business degree in 1966 while he sold typewriters for IBM to support his wife and young children. After earning an MBA from Loyola, he spent a career with IBM, including training employees in Taiwan. As he neared retirement, he picked up a law degree and began a successful arbitration/mediation service. His next focus: embarking on cooking school and creating hand-built ceramic tableware. By taking the “lifelong education” theme to heart, Davenport has become a role model for SCS students, as well as a benefactor.
